1A4: Class work covered in 2010 - 2011 (Ms. V. Redmond)
This is an outline of the work covered with this group in the academic year above.
Introduction to the course
Outline of the seven concepts
Study of concept 1: Rights and Responsibilities:
Homelessness: Students read examples of accounts of homeless people and were challenged to think about how or where they would go if they were suddenly homeless. Their basic needs and how others would react.
Each student designed posters representing their opinions on the matter.
Human rights: Students were divided into random groups based on general social divisions such as women in some Arab states, wealthy students, people in developing countries who cannot afford education etc. They experienced some of the difficulties and opinions in a class game.
UNCHR: A study of the UN Charter of Human Rights: why it was established, by whom and the meaning of each of the thirty rights.
Students were challenged to chose five rights that had more 'importance' than the rest. The ensuing debate proved it was very difficult if not impossible to rank these rights as they have different importance to different people.
Travellers in the media: Students researched stereotyping of travellers in society today and brought in newspaper articles relating to traveller issues. Posters of sterotyping were made. Discussion on traveller issues and groups set up.
Study of concept 2: Human Dignity
Powerpoint study: Students chose their favourite public person from Nelson Mandela to Yan San Su Ki. Each student researched the life, beliefs and works of their person and presented their findings in a powerpoint presentation. These can be seen on the following page.
